Here in central Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire we do all sorts of things to prep for the cold winter weather. If you use heating oil to heat your home, getting ready for the cooler temperatures will mean placing a heating oil order.

When our customers enroll in automatic deliveries, we are then able to use state-of-the-art computer software to track their heating oil use based on the weather and their fuel history. The exact amount of heating oil that a household will go through over the course of a year is impacted by multiple factors. These factors include:
There is no way to perfectly predict the exact amount of heating oil that you will need and use for a year. We can, however, narrow this number down to a pretty solid estimate.
Here in the northeastern area of the United States, your average household can estimate using anywhere between about 500 and 1,000 gallons of heating oil per year. This is based on the assumption that a 2,000-square foot house will use about 800 gallons of heating oil annually.
When it comes to your home specifically, you get an idea of how much heating oil you will use per winter season a couple of different ways.
First, you can pull up your previous oil bills to see how much you have ordered in the past.
You can also speak to a neighbor who has a similar size house about their fuel usage.
Even though we don’t use our heating oil until the winter you do not want to wait until it gets cold to place your order. This is risky, as it may leave your heating system unprepared if there is a delay in your delivery or a shortage of fuel in your area.
It is best practice to order your heating oil in the spring and summer. This way you know that you are prepared and fuel prices also tend to be lower at this time of year.
