Deciding to use diesel fuel to power an engine is a great and solid choice. After all, the energy source offers several outstanding benefits to a vehicle or piece of equipment. It can improve an engine’s performance, add years onto an engine’s life, is eco-friendly and can help an engine maintain a safe speed.

However, once you decide to use diesel fuel you have to make sure you are using the right type of diesel fuel. Using the wrong kind of diesel fuel in a vehicle or piece of equipment can cause all sorts of issues, such as poor performance and engine malfunctions.

On-road diesel fuel vs. off-road diesel fuel

The first thing that you need to determine when choosing the right diesel fuel is whether or not your engine needs on-road diesel fuel or off-road diesel fuel.

Vehicles such as trucks, public buses, school buses and shuttles that drive and stay on a road should use on-road diesel fuel.

Equipment that stays off of a road is safe to use off-road diesel vehicles and machinery. This includes generators, agricultural equipment and the moving and lifting equipment that is used on a construction site. This type of diesel fuel is made with a red dye that on-road diesel does not have. Off-road diesel fuel is usually less expensive than on-road diesel fuel since it is not subject to the same taxes.

Additional criteria for diesel fuel

When trying to choose the right diesel fuel you should also:

• Consider using fuel that is new: Diesel fuel does expire. Using diesel fuel beyond its expiration date can reduce an engine’s effectiveness. Therefore, it is more advantageous to use new fuel instead of old fuel.
• Pay attention to the cetane rating: This number indicates how easily diesel fuel ignites. A diesel fuel with a high cetane number is better for an engine’s performance and a diesel fuel with a low cetane will negatively impact an engine’s performance. For example, your engine may have a hard time starting and it may be extremely loud when it’s running. You ideally want to use a diesel fuel that has a cetane rating somewhere between 40 and 55.
• Opt for clean and high-quality fuel: Fuels that are not clean and top quality often have contaminants that can damage an engine. It is much better to purchase clean fuel from a source that you trust and that has a solid reputation.
• Adapt to the different seasons: There are specific winter-grade diesel fuels that are available in colder climates that get hit with a severe winter season. These may be beneficial to your engine and help it combat the cold temperatures.
