How to use kerosene safely

If you are someone who does use kerosene in any of the above ways, it is important that you are using the oil safely. This will help keep you, your family and your home out of harm’s way. Here are some safety tips we recommend you follow when using kerosene:

• When your kerosene appliances are in use, make sure you have an air purifier going as well. This will help reduce how much carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide you will be exposed to.
• Purchase high quality kerosene oil over something cheaper.
• Keep your kerosene oil out of the reach of both kids and pets. Ideally, your extra supply of kerosene should be in a basement, garage or shed if possible and it should be labeled so everyone knows exactly what it is.
• Always make sure that you have a fire extinguisher handy and accessible.
• Before going to sleep at night or leaving your home, make sure you turn your kerosene heaters off completely.
• If your kerosene oil spills at any point, don’t leave it – clean it up as soon as you possibly can.
• Only use kerosene heaters and appliances in well-ventilated areas. Additionally, make sure they are kept a safe distance away from anything flammable such as papers, curtains, pieces of furniture, papers, clothes and aerosol cans.
• Clean your wick every two weeks at minimum.
