Generator Fuel Additives: Do They Improve Performance and Longevity?
Here’s what you need to know
Generators are what many of us depend on in the event of an emergency that causes our power to go out. Without generators, it is possible to go hours, or even days, without working lights, refrigerators and home heating systems. Therefore, it is important to be thoughtful when it comes to the type of generator fuel you are using in your generator. You want to make sure you are using something that you can rely on and that will get you through challenging times.
It is also important to care for your generator with things like fuel additives, as this will help improve its performance and help it last longer than it otherwise would.
Fraticelli Oil & Propane shares more on this below.
The different kinds of generator fuel
Before we can talk about what you can add to the fuel that you use for your generators, we first need to break down the different kinds of generator fuel:
- Diesel fuel: You usually only find diesel fuel-powered generators in commercial settings and large facilities such as hospitals. Unfortunately, diesel fuel does produce high levels of particulate matter, carbon dioxide and additional pollutants, all of which are not favorable for the quality of our air. In terms of longevity, generators that use diesel fuel typically last a long time. However, diesel fuel itself has a certain expiration date.
- Standard gasoline: Standard gasoline can be used in any generator that produces less than 150 kilowatts of power. Gasoline is typically easy to find, which makes it a popular generator fuel choice. Gasoline expires after 12 months and is highly flammable.
- Natural gas: A generator that is powered with natural gas has to be connected to an underground gas pipeline. This means that homeowners who use these types of generators are at risk of losing power in the event that the natural gas utility goes dark due to inclement weather or a natural disaster. However, natural gas does produce a smaller amount of carbon emissions compared to other generator fuels, which makes it an appealing choice to some.
- Propane: Propane outshines the other generator fuels when it comes to eco-friendliness. Additionally, propane has virtually no expiration date. It doesn’t even degenerate over time. You don’t have to worry about a propane-powered generator not working during a blackout. These pieces of equipment will keep everything running as normal.
Fuel additives explained
Fuel additives are chemical substances that can be added to your generator’s engine to essentially help “clean” your generator’s system. Their job is to improve fuel efficiency, extend an engine’s life and keep your generator operating at peak performance level.
Generator fuel additives are specifically made to alter whatever generator fuel you are using in an attempt to make an engine work better and for longer.
